It Stuck!

IMG_2528All morning Ben kept telling me that it was going to snow, I didn’t believe him or the weather report.  I was wrong…the white stuff came and stuck!  Nathan, like me, waited all morning for the snow to fall and when it did, we couldn’t wait to get outside to play.  Our first trip outside was just to watch the soft stuff come down, but we got to play in it a little on our second trip out.  Ben, being a Jersey boy, is apparently an expert snowman builder!  He had that thing built in about 15 minutes.  Meanwhile, I was still trying to figure out where to even begin.  Eventually I just gave up and decided to be the photographer.  Nathan loved the snowman and enjoyed splashing in the puddles with the cool Disney Cars rain boots that Dad picked up today while he was napping (Daddy rules).  After we were all thoroughly frozen, we headed in for some hot chocolate with marshmallows.  Yum!

Gymboree 2 Years Later

January 2009

Today Ms. Leigh, one of our Gymboree instructors, commented on how big Nathan is getting.  She has been one of Nathan’s instructors since he started going to Gymboree at 5 weeks old.  When we first started going he just lie there on the mat like a lump looking around probably unable to focus on anything more than 12 inches away.  Now he owns the place!  The one thing that hasn’t changed though is his love for the Gymboree bubbles!  Today he went running so fast to catch them that he fell smack on his arse and got up laughing.  He also enjoyed jumping onto a mat full of baby ducks…yeah he’s a boy.

A Message from the Slacker

I’m not sure how anyone keeps up with their blogs because I just can’t seem to find enough time in a day to get anything done let alone a short post.  I nagged Ben for months to help me get this site set up so I can keep family and friends caught up. Unfortunately I’ve done a crappy job since my last post was in September.  I simply have my priorities all mixed up because I can seem find time to clean a toilet or mop a floor but I can’t find time to type a quick note.  I’m not even going to try to make excuses; I’m just a slacker!

There has been a lot going on since my last post, but I’ll give the short version.  Nathan is becoming a “grown-up” little boy and that makes me happy in some ways, but sad in others.  It seems like it was just yesterday that we brought him home from the hospital bundled up in a blanket and dependent on us for everything. Now he’s running around, finding ways to climb onto everything then jumping from them, he’s talking non-stop, and he wants to do everything on his own.  I feel so unwanted at times that it hurts a little.  The only thing that saves me from bursting into tears is when he runs up to me and pinches my leg then runs away.  That is his way of getting my attention so that I run after him and smother him with hugs and kisses.  Sometimes when I’m sitting on the sofa, he climbs up the back and asks me for mommy kisses.  I think this is a tough stage for parents because their toddlers are like cats…they just want your love, affection and help on their terms.

IMG_2133Speaking of jumping, Nathan was Tigger for Halloween.  He loved putting on his costume and bouncing around the house.  He loved trick or treating too.  He picked up the process at about the fourth house.  At first he just wanted to run inside everyone’s house once they opened the door.  But then he figured out that all he had to do was ring the doorbell, say trick or treat, thank you, and run off to the next house.  We started out early in the evening thinking that he would get tired by dusk…wrong…he kept going well after dark and we had to drag him home kicking and screaming.

IMG_2213In celebration of Nathan’s second birthday, we had two parties.  It is so hard to get families together near the holidays that sometimes it’s just easier to split things up a bit.  I was hoping that this strategy would be a little less crazy than last year’s party with a million kids running around creating chaos.  Well my plans failed.  I didn’t account for the “two year old factor” when taking this approach. I still ended up cleaning dog crap off of our floors and carpet because a guest stepped in it on the way into the house (not our dog’s crap and not our guest’s fault…we just have an inconsiderate neighbor).  Then of course I discovered birthday cake in places I didn’t think kids could even get to. The fun didn’t stop there, I found an empty juice box in Nathan’s toy chest…the juice had leaked all over the bottom which resulted in an hour of cleaning sticky toys! The good news though was that Nathan and his friends had a great time.  I loved watching the kids playing together and I kind of liked getting them wired on sugar so their parents could enjoy them later.  It was also nice to see some of our friends that we don’t get to see very often. I suppose at the end of the day I don’t mind the dog crap or sticky messes as long as everyone had a good time.

IMG_2321Our Christmas vacation didn’t go as planned this year.  We had intended on spending it with family in North Dakota, but some last minute snags forced us to stay in town, such as Ben’s last-minute knee surgery!  Poor guy…I should stop kicking him in the knee when he forgets to take out the garbage. We ended up having a blast anyway, but we missed having the family around to share the joy.  The good news though is that another reason for us staying in town was because we found out that we are pregnant!  We felt it was best to stay close to my doctors because of my unpredictable cervix.  A couple of days before Christmas we found out that we are having a boy!  Nathan will have a little brother to play with and I couldn’t be happier for him or us. I’m due on June 17, 2009 just two days before Ben and I celebrate our 5th wedding anniversary.  What a nice anniversary gift! Ben, this doesn’t mean I don’t want that vacation to Mexico on our next anniversary!

Well that’s the short version of what has gone on over the last few months.  At this point I will attempt to make a New Year’s resolution…to post something at least once a week.  I can’t be a slacker forever!

Oreo Cookies

oreo2The other day I was teaching Nathan the proper technique of Oreo cookie eating when I realized that he probably had more fun discovering Oreos at Jason and Sharyn’s pre-wedding day BBQ at the park a year ago. Maybe I should just let him have some fun and develop his own technique. I mean look how stressed out he looks trying so hard to get it right!

Drew’s Competition

Baking

Move over uncle Drew, there’s a new baker in the family.  Nathan learned how to use the mixer today.  I can’t imagine what he will put in it now that he knows how to turn the thing on.  I guess I could unplug it, but he figured out electricity a long time ago so that would be a pointless effort on my part.

Little Digger

IMG_2062Nathan has proven to be true to his gender when it comes to dirt.  He loves digging in it, dragging his feet in it, throwing it and even tasting it. I should have known this was coming after all he is related to my brother Rodney who came from outside covered in dirt every day when he was a kid.

Myrtle Beach

IMG_2011Ok so I’m bad about posting, but as they say better late than never.  We took a road trip to Myrtle Beach in August.  Nathan hadn’t been to the ocean since our New Jersey trip last year and he wasn’t old enough to really enjoy the beach then. Well he still didn’t dig it much this time either. He wasn’t crazy about the sea creeping up on his cute little toes, but he loved the sand of course.  He also loved collecting seashells, even the broken ones. Although mom and dad loved the ocean water, Nathan preferred kicking back in the pool.

We went to a carnival while we were there and Nathan had fun riding in the boats and the little cars. I can’t believe he is old enough to ride on them alone! Our little baby is growing up!

Seth’s Competition

Little Artist

In general a toddler can only be occupied with a single task or toy for about 5 minutes max…and that is only when he is well-rested, well-fed, baby (his stuffed animal) is nearby, sippy cup is full of milk, and there is global harmony among all. To my surprise though, Nathan can be occupied for up to an hour with crayons, markers, and play dough! We purchased an easel for him a couple of months ago and he loves it, but it’s not until you sit him down at the table strapped in a chair that he really gets going. But he’s not just scribbling so allow me to explain some of the masterpieces in this album. The piece on the easel has an interesting story. I drew a turtle on a blank page and then Nathan added to it. Ben asked him what the blue stuff was, he told him water. We can only assume he got the idea of the turtle in water from the “Goodnight My Duckling” book that we read to him every night before bed. As for the other two pieces taped to the wall, well he explained to me that he was drawing circles, triangles, and happy faces. If you look closely you just might see these for yourself! To add to my amazement, Nathan named the colors as he was drawing. He can identify blue, green, red, yellow, brown, purple, orange and black. I’m left with only one thing to say…watch out Uncle Seth, there is another artist and smarty pants in the Kersey family!

Scout

Scout Adoption

Ben and I thought it would be a good time to add to our growing little family. We decided on a sweet furry little blonde boy. We worked with a fantastic Golden Retriever rescue organization here in Atlanta. After meeting a few other great dogs we finally met and fell in love with Scout (formally known as Dudley). He’s about one year old and is perfect. He’s potty trained (you have no idea how much this means to me), understands a few basic commands, great on a leash, and is very lovable. He’s good with Nathan and hasn’t eaten Coco yet. Actually, Coco seems to be accepting him a bit faster than some of the cats we’ve brought home. I’m not sure she will be cuddling with him anytime soon, but she is tolerating him for now. Nathan is still a little apprehensive because Scout knocks him over once in a while, but he’s starting to hang with him as you can see in the pictures. Nathan likes trying to use him as a pillow and of course Scout loves the attention. I think they will be best buddies soon. Ben is acting like a kid of course. He is probably the most excited since he finally got the Golden Retriever he always wanted. As for me…well I like him too, but if I get doggie poop on my fingers one more time while scooping it up…he’s going to have to learn to use the liter box! Oh and the random picture in this album is Nathan cooking us dinner in his little house…yummy!

Chuck E. Cheese

Chuck E. Cheese

It’s been about 15 years since my last visit to Chuck E. Cheese and it wasn’t a good one to say the least. It smelled like body odor, sweaty feet, the ball pit was disgusting and I remember feeling sick after eating the week old pizza. So when Jodi suggested we meet there for a play date, I was a little skeptical. But to my surprise, our local Chuck E. Cheese was nothing like the one I had gone to back home years ago. To begin with, it didn’t smell like a locker room, it was relatively clean (we all know how much that means to me) and there wasn’t a germ infested ball pit! The pizza was even pretty good! It also had a toddler section of which Nathan, Charlie and Jack remained in for about two minutes and then took off exploring. Charlie got a kick out of wandering around watching the older kids play games and even tried to “help” them play. Jake (Charlie’s friend) had a great time making movies and getting printed images of himself (he knows he’s a cutie). I’m sure you can tell from the pictures that Nathan loved the monster truck…I couldn’t get him out! Charlie, on the other hand, wasn’t so fond of it. Jack was a little anxious too, but he did give it a try…kudos Jack. Oh and did I mention that Charlie ate 4 pieces of pizza? Charlie dude…where are you putting it?! Jodi, you really need to feed him more often!
